- POSITION DESCRIPTION
- Title: Registered Veterinary Technician
- Work Schedule: Full-time, M – F
- Reports to: Shelter Manager
- PRIMARY FUNCTION:
- Under the direct supervision of the Shelter Manager, the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for maintaining the health and overall well-being of all animals at the shelter. The RVT will need to administer daily medications to ill animals, prepare animals for spay/neuter surgery by performing a temperature, pulse, and respiration (TPR) check, anesthetize, and prep surgical site of animals. He/she will need to maintain clinic documentation of all control substances, required by federal and state laws and regulations. The RVT will administer vaccines and other treatments prescribed by the veterinarian, assist with dental procedures, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and etc., and assist with restraining animals.
- RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise the Veterinary Assistant by providing training, support, and direction to ensure the success of the shelter/clinic, animals, and Foundation.
- Provide excellent customer services to all constituents to include: clients, donors, volunteers, and etc.
- Ensure all surgical packs and necessary items have been sterilized by autoclaving according to directions.
- Ensure all items needed for surgery are in stock and in working condition.
- Maintain and log in files and/or charts all information pertaining to the animals and etc. in the clinic.
- Other duties as assigned.
- DAILY DUTIES:
- Combo test, vaccinate, de-worm, flea treat, and microchip all new shelter arrivals.
- Dispose of all biohazard items in correct bins and according to health regulations.
- Monitor healthy shelter animals to maintain continued health.
- Maintain cleanliness of spay/neuter clinic including sterilization of holding bins, empty trash, and dispose of biohazard materials.
- Perform all work related tasks assigned by the Shelter Manager.
- Follow all the Valley Animal Center’s policies and procedures as outlined in the employee manual.
- Perform all other duties/tasks assigned by Shelter Manager.
- QUALIFICATIONS:
- A.S Degree
- RVT license
- Perform skin scrapings
- Prepare, administer or dispense medications, drugs and vaccines all under vet’s supervision
- Understand importance of cleanliness of person, work area, and equipment maintenance
- Collect and prepare blood, urine, and feces for submission to lab
- Appreciate proper labeling and dating of drugs
- Coordinate with Office Assistant to stock and maintain routinely used supplies
- Obtain and record TRP, weight, vomition, urination, defecation, and appetite data
- Identify external parasites
- Recognize and report emergency conditions
- Make initial general exam
- Groom (baths, dips, nail trims)
- Restrain patients
- Perform First Aid for emergencies
- Remove and apply bandages
- Express anal sacs
- Place jugular catheters
- Calculate IV fluid rates and administration
- Responsible, dependable, and can take initiative
- Supervisory skills preferred
- Prior experience working in a veterinary office and/or clinic highly preferred
- Trainable
- Computer literate
- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Standing for long periods of time
- Lift animals that could weigh up to 40 pounds unassisted and up to 80+ pounds assisted.
